Christmas parcels for the elderly

Preparation of parcels in December 2014

Making a difference at Christmas

Emily (not her real name) is now largely housebound. Through television and radio she continues to take an active interest in what's happening in the world but her various illnesses and ailments stop her getting out. Her routine shopping is done for her by Age UK. So a visit from a member of the Rotary club with a parcel of special food for Christmas was very welcome. She enjoyed chatting to the Rotarian and she was certainly looking forward to enjoying the food in the parcel.

The Christmas parcels for Emily and about 120 other elderly people in the Cheltenham area were made possible by the generosity of customers at Morrisons. Members of the Rotary Club of Cheltenham collected at Morrisons in early December. The cash was then used to buy food and the Rotary Club then set up a "production line" at the Rock Youth Centre to pack all the food in parcels. Each club member then took a number of parcels and delivered them to our list of people.

Rotary Club of Cheltenham member Hon Alderman Charmian Sheppard commented:

"Our elderly clients really appreciate our visits and the food. Thanks to Morrisons for letting us collect; thanks to the Rock youth centre for allowing us to use them for our parcel factory; and, most of all, thank you to Morrisons customers for giving us their hard-earned cash."
