Riverside Walk to Spade Oak

Wed, Jun 24th 2015 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Evening walk commencing at 7.30pm and returning for a buffet meal at 9.00pm

Partners, friends and dogs are welcome

Starting and ending at The King's Head, Little Marlow this walk is about 2½ miles and entirely on level ground.  We pass along the West end of Spade Oak Lake and Nature Reserve, cross the railway, follow the River Thames bankside and have a stop-over at the Spade Oak pub before returning around the North side of the lake.

See below for a much shorter walk.

From the King's Head front entrance proceed away from the main road through Little Marlow village, leave the churchyard on your right and continue down the track in a straight line.  Proceed with the lake on your left.  There is a footpath closer to the lakeside but at the end of the lake go back onto the track to cross the railway.  Do not continue round the lake.  Caution - this is a working railway.  Cross the field as far as the river.  Turn left and follow the river bank as far as Spade Oak Wharf.

Turn away from the river, cross the railway again and follow the lane as far as Spade Oak pub.  From the pub you need to allow a minimum of 25 minutes to complete the walk so when you are sufficiently refreshed continue up the lane for just 25 yards before turning left onto a footpath.  Dog walkers should be aware there are horses (quite docile) in the field you are crossing.  When you reach the lake turn right and walk around the lake.  Again, dog walkers should be aware there may be blue green algae in the water.

Continue walking around the lake until near the far end the path divides (see picture).  At this point bear right into the woods, cross a stream and when you reach the field turn left.   At the road to the gravel works cross over and continue until you reach the lane.  Turn right and walk back through Little Marlow until you reach the King's Head.

Short walk

Drive towards Bourne End.  At the mini roundabout bear right then in 20 yards turn right into Coldmoorholme Lane.  Pass Spade Oak pub and after a further 150 yards park in the public car park.  Continue on foot for 200 yards down the lane, cross the railway and wait for the main party at Spade Oak Wharf.  Re-trace your steps to the car park and then either walk or drive to the pub.  Return to The King's Arms by car.
