17th January 2015 - Annual Burns Supper

Cambuslang Rotary hold their annual Burns Supper on Saturday 17th January 2015

Cambuslang Rotary Club held their annual Burns Supper on Saturday, 17th January at the Kings Park Hotel.  Following on from last years successful event, a capacity crowd of Rotarians, friends and guests, filled the hall in what was a sell-out occasion.

As they arrived the guests were greeted by the rousing sound of bagpipes from piper David Beveridge who then piped in the top table.  The evening was chaired by Club President Robert Dickie, who started the proceedings by introducing his speakers and invited guests at the top table.  This was followed by the arrival of the haggis, and the traditional address delivered by Ewen Hutchence.

After an excellent 4 course meal provided by the catering team at the Kings Park, the evening moved on to the entertainment and speeches.  The ever popular Piggery Brae soon had everyone singing along to their selection of Burns songs and later the audience were treated to an excellent and extremely entertaining performance of Tam OShanter from Gordon Mather.

The speakers also proved themselves to be of a very high standard.  The Immortal Memory was given by George Moore QC, who held his audience enthralled as he spoke movingly about his love of the language of Burns, his brilliant use of the Scots dialect and the legacy of the poetry and songs he left us to enjoy. The toast to the Lassies was delivered by Rev Alastair Jessamine.  His theme of attraction and repulsion was illustrated by quotes describing some of the ladies Burns met in his life the conclusion was that attraction definitely beat repulsion!  The final speaker, replying on behalf of the Lassies was Ada McDonald, who began her speech by questioning if she qualified as a lassie but proved she certainly did with her witty and able response!

After the raffle and the vote of thanks from Past President Bob McDougall the evening drew to a close with Auld Lyne Syne before the guests left the warmth of the hotel and headed out into the wintry weather.

The club would like to thank all their guests for their generous support and donations which helped to raise nearly 2000 for good causes. The main beneficiaries of this sum will be local charity South Lanarkshire Carers (who the club has been working in partnership with for several years helping to fund short breaks for carers) and the international  Ebola Emergency  Fund.
