Round 2 Report

The Rotary club of Ewell hosted the second round of Youth Speaks at Epsom Methodist church on 28/1/2015.  Teams were registered by Margaret Martin and assembled ready for a start just before 7pm. The competition was held in the main church and their were approximately 100 spectators parents friends and Rotarians .  Peter Heard and Barry Bramley organised time keeping. The questioner was John Brewer and the master of ceromnies was Betty Mclure. 

We were requested to start the Senior section first which started with Surbiton High School and their topic Second Amongst Equals highlighted prejudice amongst woman. This was followed by Halliford School who presented What makes us British. This speach described our great humour and the British quirks of the British culture. The Beacon school spoke about Autism   and gave a described how her family were affected as well as the implications on society.    All speakers gave an eloquent and passionate view of their topic. 
After an interval in which tea and coffee was served by John Davis with the assistance of Peter Yeates. After the interval  we had the intermediate competition and teams were represented by Old palace girls school in Croydon who presented why Technology makes us Lazy. Aberdour's your choice gave a viewpoint on the choice of eating unhealthy and healthy foods. Matthew Arnold Schools subject gave an insist into extremes individuals take to be fit. 

The judges from Epsom Speakers Society congratulated all teams on their performance and singled out and advised that there were only three marks between the teams. The winners were Old Palace school and Haliford School.  Rotary would like to show their appreciation to all those that took part. The winning teams will take part in the Youth Speaks final at Heathfield School in Walton on Thames on the 27th February.
