Speaker: Richard Graham. Subject: Guernsey and the Crown

Colonel Richard Graham’s new book Guernsey and the Crown tells the story of Guernsey’s special relationship with the Crown, from William the Conqueror to the present day. It examines the achievements and characters of the distinguished and sometimes not so distinguished representatives of the Crown in Guernsey while exploring the architectural and physical nature of their establishments, ‘The Government House’.

Beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary images of people, places and documents. Over 300 pages of approachable interesting text, with more than 170 pictures, printed in full colour and presented in a hardback binding with illustrated cover.

It was his experience of fourteen years in his appointment at Government House – and, he would add, his long marriage to a fiercely proud Guernsey woman – which motivated Richard Graham to share with the reader an enlightening and fascinating insight into the historical relationship between Guernsey and the Crown and a thoughtful, astute appreciation of its significance in determining Guernsey’s rare and little understood place in the world as a Crown Dependency.

“…I commend this book to historians, politicians and civil servants both locally and beyond our shores, but I would stress that it also tells an uplifting story for all Islanders and for all those who have chosen to make their home here, however temporarily…

Readers will appreciate Richard Graham’s efforts and applaud what he has accomplished. I am delighted to have been associated in this small way with a truly worthwhile, intriguing and illuminating undertaking.”
