Young Scientist Competition 2015

The annual competition for local junior schools teams from Year 5 to show their scientific abilitiies.

Once again the club has sponsored the annual Young Scientist Competition for Year 5 pupils from our local junior schools.

The competition is run by the Science department at Fleetwood High School with the hope that it will engender an interest in science at an early age.

This first half of this year's competition featured a problem-solving exercise. Each team had to construct a device or contraption that would "deliver" an unbroken egg to a target placed at the centre of a "No Entry" circle. Teams were given 25 minutes to construct their machine followed by a nerve-wracking 60 seconds to successfully operate their creation.

The second half consisted of a science quiz with questions covering chemical, physical and biological topics.

After a very close contest, the winners were Anchorsholme School who finished level on points with Shakespeare School but won the ensuing tie-breaker. Baines Endowed School came in third.

All the teams were exceptional and the final result was always in doubt. Well done everybody!

My thanks go to all the various staff members from the competing schools who gave up their time to prepare their teams, to the teams themselves for the way they acquitted themselves and finally to all the science staff at Fleetwood High School for putting together such an interesting challenge.
