September 2014 - Football, solicitors and Danes

A really busy month - four speakers and a visit from our Danish twin club

September 8th 2014 - A Talk about the work of Inter Care

Diane and John from Inter Care answering questions after the meeting.

Inter Care is a unique charity that recycles quality surplus medicines helping to reduce waste and saves African lives by providing much needed aid.

September 15th 2014 - Judith Barnes, Timms Solicitors

Stepping up to the mark after the late withdrawal of Craig Day and not saying "No, sorry Mr President" Judith was in at the deep end. Judith's "A day in the office at Timms' had all the members' attention throughout her 35 minutes. Judith explained how, from walking into Timms office 24 years ago, to do work experience for not one but fifty two weeks took Mr Howes one of the senior solicitors by surprise. Then off to University having not been deterred by her year with Timms to study law. Back to Timms and 16 years on is now the specialist on Employment Law. However rather than numbing our minds with Solicitor speak and Acts Judith enlightened us on what surprises can occur from day to day in a solicitor's office with claimants requesting compensation 'dropping their trousers!'  Placing their foot on her desk throughout the consultation, it (the foot), being the injured party and finally a woman being shown into her office to see a solicitor and then refusing to leave until she had been sectioned. Whoever said being a solicitor was hum drum couldn't have been more wrong.

And as a point of order answered questions on No Win No Fee claims and cold callers offering their services. Well done Judith. Purple is the colour!!!!

September 22nd 2014 - Visit from Danish Rotarians

Our President and the 3 hosts wearing aprons  presented by Jan Caspersen at the recent informal visit by members of Vejle Nord Rotary Club. Jan is Chairman of a Cookery school in Vejle and he hopes that we can put them to good use to 'blend' goodwill between our Clubs!

September 22nd 2014 - Rev. Mike Redshaw My Job Talk

Rotarian Mike Redshaw gave us an informative, and amusing talk about his job as a Superintendent Minister in the Methodist Church, this position is equivalent to a Bishop in the C of E.

Mike described how his early life in the NE of England led to his joining the Church and wanting to help others.  His sartorial style has become a 'trade mark', and takes any stuffiness out of his position!

After this meeting Mike was leaving to go to Romania to help a disadvantaged Community he works with there.

September 29th 2014 -  Lee Brown, Community Manager at St Georges Park

Lee's power point presentation illustrated the comprehensive nature of the activities at St. George's Park. A number of Football Association related activities take place there in addition to the Football Association itself such as Football Development, FA Learning, Club England, the League Managers Association, the Players Football Association, Spire Health Care and a number of other organisations.

He went on to illustrate the scale of some of the activities where almost 400,000 coaches have gone through level 1 - 5 training under FA Learning and nearly 82,000 UEFA coaching awards from grassroots to elite. In 2013/14 alone nearly 40,000 went through level 1 & 2 youth award qualifications. The FA's Licensed Coaches` Club now has over 32,000 members. 120 National Courses were held at St. George's in 2013/14.

24 England squads and 98 Club England stays have taken place and the Men's seniors have been at St. George's ten times. In addition 94 professional football clubs have used the facilities inc Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Fulham and Norwich. A number of international teams have also visited inc Monaco, Galatasaray, Minnesota United, Steau Bucharest, Mainz FC, FC Barcelona and FC Porto.

As part of the planning agreement with East Staffordshire Borough Council approx 20% of all football activities are community/grassroots specific with over 600 community and grassroots clubs playing at least once during 2013/14 involving nearly 10,000 players. In addition over 50 schools nationwide have used the facility with over 1,000 players having access to community pitch hire indoor and outdoor over the last twelve months.

These statistics indicate that all levels of football use the grounds which comprise full size pitches, including a replica of that at Wembley Stadium, are both indoor and outdoor, all weather pitches together with treatment rooms and hotels.

Our Club has been extremely grateful to Lee for his support, help and advice with the smooth running of the Inter District Football Tournaments at St. George's in 2013 and 2014 and look forward to working with him on that for 2015 which will be held on 31 May 2015.
