Speaker Ranald Barrie - Not just Another Fruit Cake

Tue, Jul 28th 2015 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Ranald Barrie gave a talk on Dundee Cake to St. Andrews Kilrymont Rotary Club.
Ranald said the cake was apparently first baked for Mary, Queen of Scots who didn't like cherries and preferred other ingredients.
The delicacy became synonymous with Dundee in the 1700s when the Keiller family bakery business in Seagate produced the cake made from sultanas, Seville oranges and decorated atop with almonds in concentric circles.
The Keiller family extended their bakery and marmalade business to London and Guernsey and quality was their key word for success. The Keiller name may have gone but Dundee Cake is still popular and European protected name status is being sought by city bakers.
Ranald provided delicious samples of Dundee Cake courtesy of bakers Goodfellow & Steven.
David Sandford proposed thanks.
