PARKRUN and STAART in St Andrews

Tue, Mar 8th 2016 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

St Andrews Kilrymont Rotarians heard talks from representatives of two local running groups, Chris Tulleth, of STAART, and Gary Ovenstone, of parkrun.
Chris explained that St Andrews Adventure Running Team began in October 2013 with 10 friends enjoying a 12-mile assault course run.
Within four weeks numbers had swelled to 30 runners taking on beach and cross country runs with obstacle-strewn routes. The club took part in Toughmudder meetings in Scotland.
A year later the St Andrews group had official status with jogscotland and had 300 registered members and 150 regular runners.
The jogging group trains 3 nights a week and its aim is to promote fitness and physical well-being for men and women aged 16 and over.
It caters for all levels with walkers, jog-walkers, joggers, jog-runners and runners.
This year the group has five women training for the London marathon.
Gary Ovenstone is the event director of St Andrews parkrun which takes place every Saturday at 9.30am at Craigtoun Park.
There are over 380 parkrun venues in the UK. The aim is to provide time-trial running enjoyment for all ages from under 5s to over 80s over a 5km course.
The 5km course at Craigtoun is a three-lap route round the park.
The weekly event is run by volunteers and any wishing to take part should register first on the club website (www.parkrun.org.uk/standrews).
Usually at Craigtoun  there are about 150 runners looking to improve on their personal best times. At the Christmas run over 170 took part and sometimes the number has been above 200. On March 19 the group will be holding its 200th event and are hoping for a record number of participants.

Fiona Roger introduced the speakers and Gordon Mackenzie proposed thanks.
*The Rotary club's End Polio Now fund-raising event at Holy Trinity Church last month raised £1400. The club would like to thank the public who gave so generously, Maureen Johnston for providing soup, Fisher & Donaldson for donating bread and the church for the venue and facilities.
