Winner Anton goes through to the National Finals!

Many congratulations to Anton for his magnificent performance to win the Cluster (Regional) Final of the Young Musician Instrumental category, to go through to the National Finals in April!  Anton was sponsored by Rotary Newton Abbot.  We also had a number of second places from our District, despite the long journey to Wales for this stage of the competition. Anton is pictured here with our District Governor, David.

Supporting Shelterbox following earthquakes in Morocco and floods in Libya

Following communications seeking advice with regard to the disasters which have affected Morocco and Libya, a number of clubs held public collections.
Rotary District 1175 is working with ShelterBox to establish how we can assist in this situation.

 Morocco earthquake

A ShelterBox emergency assessment team will arrive in Marrakesh in the next day or so to find out what support is needed following the earthquake, and if they are well placed to help. Their teams will be assessing the damage as well as speaking with local people, authorities, organisations, and the Rotary network as they try to understand how many people are without adequate shelter. ShelterBox are in contact with D9010 via their District Governor.

Libya floods

The flooding in eastern Libya, which has caused widespread destruction in the city of Derna, has been sudden and devastating. ShelterBox are carefully monitoring the situation as it unfolds, and the humanitarian need becomes clearer. More than 30,000 people are displaced according to the UN and we are considering whether a ShelterBox response is possible to support people affected. ShelterBox will use their response criteria to make sure they are using their time, money, and people in the most effective way.
Therefore, any immediate, planned fundraising activity from Rotary Clubs in light of the above disasters need to be aware that the money raised will be contributed to their general fund and used wisely by ShelterBox to help people made homeless by conflict or disaster – wherever the need is greatest.

Donations to ShelterBox can be made via their website at www.shelterbox.org/donate
