15th June - Burton Sea Cadets - Ship Ahoy
On Monday 15th June, APO Judith Mitchell Petty Officer Luke Clay and Trainee Heather from Burton Sea Cadets gave the Club a talk and video show about their organisation. There was no doubt whatsoever that Luke was sporting the shiniest shoes in the room.
The Burton Sea Cadets was formed about 70 years ago. Named after the patron saint of Burton upon Trent their premises, “TS Modwena” are based on the River Trent and provide activities with a nautical theme for young people between the ages of 10 and 18. They, presently, have 67 cadets and there is a waiting list to join.
Based on the customs of the Royal Navy the Sea Cadets can provide training in sailing, powerboating, canoeing, expedition leadership and engineering. It is a source of great pride to the management of the Burton Cadets that approximately 25% of their cadets go on to have a career in the Royal Navy or Marines.
There are 400 Sea Cadet Units across the UK. Each Unit has charitable status enabling them to raise funds for their individual running costs. They are always on the look out [oh dear!] for stuff [eg. engine parts] which can be used at TS Modwena. On their shopping list at the moment are a new mini bus, a rowing boat and more prosaically blinds.
Rotarian David Buchanan, suitably sporting a Captain Birds Eye beard, thanked the officers for their interesting talk and presentation remarking that it was rather bizarre that there should be such a flourishing Sea Cadets Unit in a town which was about as far from the sea as it was possible to be in the UK.
