Duns Rotary Club has now officially become a Dementia Friendly Club

Club Council Members with Peter Lerpiniere

Last Thursday Evening Peter Lerpiniere,  Alzheimer Scotland’s dementia nurse consultant for the Borders, took the club members through the training to become Dementia Friends, before presenting each person present with their Certificate and badge.

Peter has been in role for some months now and his post was designed to further the fight against Alzheimer’s and dementia in the Borders.

As part of the training, Peter highlighted 5 important truths about Dementia:

1.   Dementia is not a natural part of ageing
2.   Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain
3.   Dementia is not just about losing your memory
4.   It is possible to live well with dementia
5.   Theres more to a person than peoples perception

The Rotary Club played an important part in setting up the monthly Forget-me-not Dementia Friendly cafe which meets on the last Thursday of each month in Duns Church Hall.  It is hoped that other groups will now undertake the Dementia Friends training as part of moving Duns towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Community.
