A presentation by PP Iain Gow

President John Kilgour opened Tuesday’s meeting by welcoming two new members to the club. Alistair Robb and Gobinda Kharel have transferred from the Rotary Club of Leven. They were warmly welcomed as members of the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy.

Rotarian Lindsay Stewart informed members that our opponents in the opening round of this year’s “Gavel” competition will be the Rotary Clubs of Stirling, Dunfermline and Inverkeithing & Dalgety Bay. He asked for names of those who wish to take part.

Our speaker was Past President Iain Gow who gave an entertaining and informative presentation on the nature of memory inspired by the war time recollections of Ron McGill at the club meeting on 21st July.

Iain explained how sensory and short term memories differ as well as showing how memory can be extended by repetition. Members were relieved to hear that there is very little decay in the brain as we grow older and that it has an unlimited capacity to store information. Iain finished his talk by demonstrating how we can generate false memories. We all thought that he had said the word “sleep” at the beginning of his presentation but we were mistaken.
