On Thursday 9th July the Rotary Club of South Queensferry held a fellowship meeting at the Hawes Inn. During the evening members were treated to a talk by Rotarian David Batty about his recent visit to Harris and St Kilda. A keen hill walker, Munro bagger and photographer, David's talk was accompanied by a magnificent selection of pictures of the stunning scenery and wildlife of these western isles. Harris, in contrast to Lewis to the north, has a landscape of bare hills which includes Clisham, the highest mountain in the outer isles. St Kilda, lies in the Atlantic 40 miles to the west of North Uist. Its native population was resettled on the mainland in 1930 and St Kilda is now only occupied by a few service personnel and wildlife conservators who study the remarkable birdlife on the island group. Fulmars, gannets and puffins are plentiful and the cliffs at Conachair on the largest island are the highest in Britain.
