Murder in the Cathedral

ROTARY CLUB OF RHYL Prominent local hospices St Kentigern and Ty Gobaith are set to benefit from multi-fundraising projects being mounted by four Rotary clubs in the Vale of Clwyd. First up will be a dramatic production of T S Eliot’s acclaimed ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ to be staged at St Asaph Cathedral on Saturday November 21 and performed by one of Wales’ leading amateur theatre groups the Phoenix Theatre Company, who are joining forces with the Rotary clubs of Rhyl, Denbigh, Ruthin and St Asaph, supported by the Clwyd Community Theatre Association and sponsored by the Coperative Society Community Fund. Chairman of Rhyl’s vocational committee Gareth Wynne Jones told a business and fellowship at Faenol Fawr that this promised to be a truly memorable re-telling of the bloody death of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 and he urged all members to ensure it received their fullest support. The same two charities will also benefit from the new-look Charity Golf Day to be held at Rhuddlan golf club next May 5, one day before the 90th anniversary charter night celebration of Rhyl’s 90th birthday. Organiser David Davies said that for the first time the day-long event would feature separate competitions for both men’s and women’s teams and a big entry was expected. Meanwhile, the club’s charitable kitty has been further boosted with takings of close on £260 from the Wishing Well in the town’s White Rose Centre, shared equally with Rhyl Inner Wheel Club, treasurer John Williams announced. Secretary Gordon Marshall confirmed that Rhyl’s first round opponents in the annual Rotary District quiz would be Colwyn Bay, the team they defeated on their way to an unprecedented appearance in the semi-final last year. This return derby encounter is set to take place on September 22 with Rhyl enjoying home advantage as they look to go all the way for the first time in this popular inter-club event.
