Our speaker was Chris Sellar whose subject was sport in South West Edinburgh and the new Oriam centre currently being built at the Heriot Watt University.
Established in April 2013, South-West Edinburgh Community Sports Hub, based at Heriot Watt University, is part of a national project to increase the number of people of all ages participating in sport and physical activity in local communities across Scotland. The hubs bring local people together and provide a home for local clubs and sports organisations. They also provide information, support, and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities Scotland.
The South-West Edinburgh Sports Hub works with fifteen local sports clubs. They are encouraged to work together, co-ordinate their activities and share facilities. The hub gives awards and does promotions. Among many other activities, they helped the recently formed Sharks basketball club to open. They were also responsible for starting the game of walking football. Girl’s football is being heavily promoted.
In 2012 The Scottish government decided a sports facility was required for Scotland. The concept was put out to tender and was won by the Heriott Watt University in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council. Construction started in 2015.
Oriam will be the performance base for both the Scottish FA and Scottish Rugby Union, as well as  Basketball Scotland, Scottish Handball, Scottish Squash & Racketball and Scottish Volleyball. Oriam will provide athletes, coaches and officials with the facilities to create an exceptional performance environment that will re-affirm and strengthen Scotland’s sporting credentials and put the nation firmly on the world stage. The centre will open in late August 2016.
Chris then showed a number of slides showing how the centre will look when it is completed.
The club’s vote of thanks was given by Naveen Ramdeehul.
