On 20 April our speaker was Robin Murdoch, former engineer and now committed archaeological heritage enthusiast. He titled his talk “Bavelaw and Threipmuir: a brief history”.

The principal focus of Robin’s talk was, as his title suggests, a historical review of the Bavelaw and Threipmuir area identifying sites of interest from Bavelaw Castle to Threipmuir Steading. He traced the development and also the deterioration of buildings over the years with reference to historic Ordnance Survey maps, Census records and aerial photographs as well as research on the ground.

Clearly Robin has carried out a huge amount of research but his interest extends also to restoration work, most notably in working to restore Threipmuir Steading along with Youth Vision, an organisation in which our Club has a continuing interest. All the restoration work has been carried out entirely by volunteers with funding from grants, including a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Rotarian Angus MacPhie thanked Robin on behalf of the Club for this new insight into the Pentland Hills we thought we knew.
