The biennial visit to Filey of our friends of the Pont-à-Mousson Rotary Club took place from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th May, with fourteen people being met off the train at Seamer Station at 5:20 p.m. From there hosts and visitors travelled to an aperitif reception at the home of President David and Gillian Ward. After a convivial renewal of friendships, our guests then moved on with their hosts to settle in, before an evening meal in mixed groups of ten hosted by Rotarians
After breakfast on Saturday morning, hosts and guests visited the racing stables of Brian Ellison Racing in Norton, and enjoyed an excellent guided tour of the leading edge training equipment and viewing of some of the many horses in training. There followed a buffet lunch at the Ham & Cheese Inn at Scagglethorpe, with the afternoon being spent on visits to local attractions, including the gardens at Scampston, the RSPB Reserve at Bempton Cliffs and the beach and promenade at Filey.
A formal meal was held in the evening at the White Lodge Hotel, preceded by speeches from the Presidents of the two Clubs. Post dinner entertainment was provided by Filey Club members in the form of the five minute austerity version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’; overall a very convivial evening.
The visit of our French friends concluded on Sunday with a formal meeting of members of the two Clubs in the morning, followed by a buffet lunch, in the Community Centre at Wold Newton. After lunch entertainment consisted of organised singing by the Pont-à-Mousson visitors, and less organised renderings by the English. All too soon it was time to say our farewells, and transport our French friends to Seamer Station for the 2:54 p.m. train for York and then onwards to London.
