The first round for the Chef of the year. The Berwickshire High School show how to do it.

Rotary Young Chefs Competition 2015/16

Six fantastic meals were created in the Home Economics Department at the Berwickshire High School on Monday. They were prepared and presented by young chefs Courtney Bell, Adam Gaston, Gaby Gracey, Finlay Hamilton, Rachel Hudson and Chloe Robertson as entries in the Rotary Young Chefs Competition 2015/16, organised by the Rotary Club of Duns in collaboration with the school. After an intensive two hours of planning, preparing and cooking, each chef laid out a table for two with main course and dessert.

Watching the whole process and tasting all the food was Katrina Reynolds of the Allanton Inn, recently listed in Michelin's 'Eating Out in Pubs' Guide. She judged each entry by a range of criteria including planning, healthy choice of dishes, presentation of table, hygiene and neatness of work area, taste and presentation of both main course and dessert. Katrina was highly impressed by the calibre of all the young chefs which made her job of identifying the winner all the harder. After careful analysis of all the criteria, Katrina awarded First Place to Courtney Bell and Second to Gaby Gracey.

Head Teacher John Clarke awarded certificates to all the young chefs and judge Katrina Reynolds presented cups to winner Courtney and runner up Gaby. These two will now go forward to the Rotary South of Scotland Final in Kelso next month. Chairman of Rotary Youth Service Committee Eric Bridgewater thanked Mrs Reynolds for her excellent judging and expressed Rotary's special thanks to Diane Mackay, Head of Home Economics, for making it all possible.
