An evening to remember
Our 80th Charter Dinner was a splendid event attended by 160 members and guests. There was a superb four course meal and entertainment was provided by The Cantata Ensemble with music and song from West End and Broadway Shows, Rat Pack and Glen Miller numbers as well as Acapella songs and popular modern melodies.

In responding to the Toast to Burton Rotary Club and proposing a Toast to our guests and visitors President Bob reminded everyone that the first official meeting of the Burton Rotary Club was held in the Queens Hotel on 6 March 1936, the day after the maiden flight of a Spitfire and the day before Hitler’s invasion of the Rhineland.
President Bob commented that, today, our Club membership looks rather different from 1936.There were, then, no lady members among the 15 who joined in 1936 and nowadays we don’t have a bacon curer, a hairdresser or a tyre manufacturer in our ranks. The closest connection to tyres is that we meet weekly in the Pirelli stadium, the ninth of the meeting venues used by the Club since its inception, and of course our Charter was being held in the Pirelli Stadium for the first time.
Activities over the last 80 years were reviewed by President Bob and he concluded his address by thanking everyone, Rotarians and guests alike, who had attended the Charter and also Carley and the Pirelli staff for looking after us so well. He had wondered whether we ought to ask them to emulate the sumptuous repast of 7 courses and coffee enjoyed at the first Charter dinner of the Club on 9 October 1936 but thought this might be a bit much with such modern-day emphasis on obesity! Finally he drew attention to the handsome President’s Chair he was sitting on, and which was presented to the Club by the founder President in August 1937.
