Dr Karen Adamson gave us an excellent explanation of diabetes and its treatment in a way which we could all – yes all of us – understand.

Karen is a consultant physician at St John’s Hospital from where she acts as lead clinician for the Diabetes Clinical Network in NHS Lothian. She is also an honorary clinical senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.

Karen explained the difference between Type 1 diabetes which affects a relatively small number of people from an early age and Type 2 which tends to affect older people. The condition is essentially a result of higher sugar levels than the pancreas’s production of insulin is able to cope with satisfactorily. Most people are unaware that they have diabetes. The most common symptoms are thirst, tiredness and foot problems. Type 1 tends to impact on smaller blood vessels affecting eg eyes or kidneys, whilst Type 2 affects more the larger blood vessels leading eg to heart and stroke complications. She spoke of the treatments and medications available but stressed that the best way to prevent or treat Type 2 diabetes was through diet and exercise. The simple message was: Eat healthily and keep your weight under control.

Easier said than done?

Peter Mcgavigan thanked Karen on behalf of the Club for a presentation that was both informative and interesting.
