Aug 2016 VISIT & MEAL - the Sanger Institute 3.45pm

Mon, Aug 22nd 2016 at 3:45 pm - 7:00 pm

A fascinating Tour of the Sanger Institute Campus, Hinxton ( to the south east of Cambridge ). Meet at 3.45pm. Organiser - Alan Franklin

Today we had a rare opportunity to have a tour of the lovely Sanger Institute Campus and to hear all about their recent work on the Human Genome and its medical implications.

We met at 3.45pm for the Tour at 4pm and followed it by a tasty local pub meal at the Red Lion, Whittlesford 7pm.

We were met by Steve and Emily from the Hospitality Team who really looked after us well. He gave us a very well illustrated briefing on the biology involved in their work and we were soon incredibily impress by the Big Data issues that they struggle with.  The site hosts the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the European Bioinfometrics Campus.  So the huge amounts of data generated by the Institute teams are passed to the Campus to be digested and collated so that scientists across the world can have free access to it all to support their work.  Mapping one Human Genome requires tracking around 3.3billion letters in more than 20,000 genes plus control strings (23 pairs of Chromosomes)  - then if you want to compare 2 or more genomes things escalate rapidly..... Even Google cannot cope with this size of problem !

If you are interested in knowing more then the newly refurbished Exhibition Centre (in the old Hinxton Hall and Stables) is open on the first Thursday of each month from 5.30-8.30pm FREE and houses a permanent display plus temporary exhibitions eg Silent Signal. Book in at
