Maynard’s Sweets
Once again, Peter Davis stood in to entertain us, with recollections of early days in Stroud.
Pete and Joan acquired a mostly derelict shop in Stroud in the High Street, to further their retail business.
The property, once owned by Maynards Sweets, was in poor condition, and whilst surveying the property, discovered in the attic space, several old business documents of Maynards, relating to the 1940’s, a time when rationing meant a very limited amount of confectionery was available.
The prices and turnover at that time, made for interesting reading, and painted a graphic picture of an aspect of life at that time.
Peter intends to pass these to Stroud Museum, to add a little more to a picture of life in that time.
Well done Peter, and our thanks.
Mike Shillitoe.
