Club Meeting "” Mike Jane

Tue, Sep 20th 2016 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Junior Vice-President Mike Jane spoke about his career as a cancer surgeon, and Graham Smith proposed the vote of thanks.

President Bill Jones welcomed eleven other members, and announced that the annual Six Clubs Dinner would be held at Cairndow on Wednesday October 12 at 7 for 7.30pm.

Junior Vice-President Mike Jane, a St Andrews and Manchester medical graduate, spoke on the subject of Sarcoma 1982-2014. He said this is a cancer that arises from transformed cells of mesenchymal origin. Thus, malignant tumors made of bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, vascular, or hematopoietic tissues are, by definition, considered sarcomas.

This is in contrast to a malignant tumor originating from epithelial cells, which are termed carcinoma. Human sarcomas are extremely rare among adults, but much more common and much more curable among children. Common malignancies, such as breast, colon, and lung cancer, are almost always carcinoma.

He said that to obtain good results in treating sarcoma takes teamwork, lots of research, and international co-operation. Much of his career was involved in setting up and head-hunting for centres for sarcoma treatment. Graham Smith proposed the vote of thanks.

The weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was won by Adam Muggoch.
