Christmas Message

Ladies’ Day lunch was very well attended by 55 members and guests, including two ‘Young Musicians’, pianist Mhairi Urquart and classical guitarist Kierran McCrossan from Balwearie High School, whose accomplished performances were well received by all present. President Mark Rossiter welcomed Ashley Davidson, Euro scholar candidate for the year and also thanked all the Interactors who had helped Rotarian volunteers at the club’s annual Christmas Party on Saturday at Templehall Community Centre.

Headteacher of Balwearie High School, Dr More, expressed his appreciation of the work carried out with the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy and encouraged continued involvement in a variety of projects.

The Christmas Message from past president Reverend Brian Tomlinson firstly took a look back in time, revealing that in Christmas 1906 a Kirkcaldy grocer’s shop sold Ruby Port at 7 1/2d! in 1916, soldiers on leave attended recitals by the Lang Toun Ladies and Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society, while in 1941 at the Rio Kirkcaldy Choral Union played Handel’s Messiah to an audience of over 2000.

Moving on to present times, Brian intriguingly said he would be spending Christmas Eve in a field in Ayrshire in the company of his family. In the middle of this field, he revealed, is the small church where he will pause to think about and reflect on the journey to Bethlehem and the message of peace and goodwill to men.  Despite the many difficult and despairing times, he said, make time to rest, reflect and remember and be true to oneself.  A kindly word can drown out despair.
