Club Meeting "” District Governor

President Bill Jones welcomed 14 other members and one guest, District Governor Bill Campbell of the Alloway club.

Youth Service convener Adam Muggoch reported on a successful local round of the Young Chef of the Year competition held at Hermitage Academy last Tuesday evening. The winner was Lois Fish, one of three out of six finalists to have progressed from the Young Baker competition, and she will take part in the District 1230 final early next year. He said that the adjudicator was most impressed with the high standard achieved.

The next event is the Young Musician competition at Lomond School a week tomorrow, and Adam also announced that it had been decided to run a Junior Musician competition at Hermitage Academy after Easter.

Community Service convener Bill Deans asked members to sell as many tickets as possible for the Wine Tasting in the Commodore Hotel on Friday November 18 at 7.30pm.

District Governor Bill Campbell spoke about the changes and challenges clubs face, and said that what rotary does well is service — locally, nationally and internationally. But he warned that Rotary GB&I is approaching a crisis, as the average age of members is 74, and many new members were not being retained.

He also spoke about the centenary of Rotary Foundation next year, and said that it had done so much over the years — most notably the End Polio Now campaign which had resulted in a huge reduction in the number of cases in the countries where it was a major problem.

He concluded by presenting the club with a banner, and president Bill proposed a vote of thanks. This was instantly repaid when the DG drew Bill's name as winner of the weekly raffle for a whisky miniature.

The monthly raffle, this time for a bottle of Old Polteney 12 year-old single malt whisky from Wick, was won by Douglas Dow.
