For some years, The Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy has held a ‘Literacy Day’ when various Rotarians are invited to read poems or other literary works that they enjoy. The ‘Literacy Day’ was established in memory of Ron MacLaren, a much loved Rotarian who died some years ago.
This year four Club members gave enjoyment to fellow members with a poem ‘Originally’ by Dame Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate since May 2009. This was followed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘The Lamplighter’ ; and appropriately for Spring, a reading of Wordsworth’s ‘The Daffodils’. RL Stevenson again featured as opening words from his ‘Treasure Island’ stirred memories. The wisdom of King Solomon was recalled from The Book of Kings; and two soliloquies from Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ rounded off the weekly meeting.
