A vocational talk by Shamshad Adams

On Tuesday 30 May President Mark welcomed 24 members and 2 guests to the lunchtime meeting of the Rotarty Club of Kirkcaldy.

He invited those members with good news to report to make the usual small donation to the colourful charity cow moneybox. Rotarian John Kilgour enthused about the dinner he had had with Barack Abama, admittedly along with about 800 other guests He found the evening very inspiring. As her year on District duties neared its end Rotarian Ann Mitchell was still travelling widely with Charter Anniversaries to attend in Orkney (where 154 were present) and closer to home at Craigencault Ecology Centre where Kirkcaldy Raith celebrated their first five years. She handed over a banner from the Orkney club and explained the symbolism of the lighthouse which features on it.

President Mark thanked all present for their support for the weekly charity raffle which this week raised £50, before inviting new Rotarian Shamshad Adams to tell us about herself.

Shamshad explained she had been born in Oxford as one of 5 children, before moving to Glasgow and then to Fife in 1972. Always active she was considered the tomboy of the family but was not deterred by a series of 3 broken arms. With her father successful with 3 retail shops and Shamshad learning on the job that there is more than meets the eye to successful retailing she bought her own small newsagents, which she expanded to a shop of 3000 square feet before selling it in 2004. About this time she got the Woman of the Year Award and a cover photograph from an important trade magazine. By then she had become an early possessor of formal academic qualifications in retailing and became a Training Consultant .

She is married with 3 children. Being told by her undergraduate daughter that that she doubted whether she could manage a proper university degree Mum somehow managed to squeeze enough time out of a somewhat busy lifestyle to get a 4 year law degree in 2 years with an excellent 2.1 grade.

Not one to refuse new challenges she has spent several years at the Inland Revenue then as a part time Court Clerk before joining the Legal Services Guild where she helps to guide people needing legal help to the people who can best do that.

Incredibly, she has many hobbies – most of them involving expending energy.

President Mark lead the Vote of Thanks from an exhausted but delighted audience. More sadly he shared the news that Rotarian Jim Dumbreck was in Cameron Hospital after a fall. Dallas reminded all present that next Tuesday was Club Affairs day when Committee Chairmen explain their plans for next year. There is a Club Council meeting on Monday evening .
