60 miles for 60 years - D of E Tweed Canoe Challenge

60 miles for 60 years - D of E Tweed Canoe Challenge

An Appreciation
The last 9 of our posts all relate to the challenge we set ourselves as a club to paddle 60 miles down the Tweed to mark 60 years of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, and in doing so to raise funds to enable many young people to continue to take part.
However, the initiative would not have been possible without the assistance and support of many people and organisations as listed below:
Jane Sargent and Andy Pearson of Innerleithen Paddlers and SBC OutdoorEd. Dept. for supervising our efforts in the canoes on all three days;
Our colleague Jim McPherson for his planning and supervision on all three days;
Another colleague Colin Ross for his transporting of participants;
The numerous other club members for simply turning up to support us along the way, and of course providing the hot drinks and home baking !;
District Governor Olive Geddes for turning out to see us safely off;
Scottish Borders Council, Outdoor Education Dept. for the use of their equipment;
Sopra Steria for release of supporting staff;
David Woodhouse from RC of Eyemouth for his support at Kelso on day 2;
Jim Hettrick and David McClymont also from RC of Eyemouth for their support at the very end;
And finally to our many supporters who donated to the cause - helping our local young people to develop leadership and good citizenship skills.
THANK YOU TO ALL

From Saturday 13th to Monday 15 th of August, Members of the Rotary
Club of Selkirk will be paddling over 60 miles (100km) of the River Tweed
as a fund raising (sponsored) event and we would like to ask for your
support in this venture.
The 100km distance matches the Centenary of Rotary International's own
charity, called Rotary Foundation. It is also just over 60miles, matching the
Diamond Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which is
this year's beneficiary in the South of Scotland Rotary District.
We will be starting at Cardrona on Saturday 13th August and plan to travel
20 miles to Melrose that day.
Sunday 14th will see us going from Melrose to Kelso, (another 20 miles)
then on Monday we will complete the journey by paddling the 22 miles
from Kelso to the finish which will be somewhere between Paxton House
and Berwick.
We plan to involve other Rotary Clubs on, or near to, our route such as
Melrose, Kelso and Eyemouth and hopefully add to the fund raising

possibilities.

Day 1 - all 'sailors' safe and well after phase 1, Cardrona to Melrose. Rtn's Jan Henderson, Doug Forsyth, Jim McPherson, and Club President Adam Borwick paddled their hearts out along a fast flowing Tweed, ably overseen by Andy Pearson, Kieran Turnbull, and Jane Sargent.

Our considerable back up team followed us all the way with flasks and all else.

We were privileged to have our District Gvnr Olive Geddes see us off, who was accompanied by Jonas the End Polio Now bear - however declined the offer of a free ride down the river !!

Day 2 on the Tweed and all is well !
Rtn's Grant Gill, Colin Ross and Paul Tomlinson were lead through the best of Borders scenery by Jane Sargeant, Andy Pearson and Rtn Jim McPherson, including Leaderfoot Bridge, Mertoun Cauld, and Kelso Bridge.

Throughout the three days of our canoe challenge were are most grateful of the support of Sopra Steria and the many others who are sponsoring our members.

Day 3 Kelso to Berwick upon Tweed.

D of E Diamond Challenge completed in style. What a brilliant day for our final day of our three day canoe challenge down the Tweed. Rtn's Ferdous Ahmed, Linda Laurie, and Edith Scott done us all proud in completing the final leg from Kelso to Berwick. Along the way a few of the Queens Swans as well as our own backing team came out to support us.
Appreciations to follow after another wee clip of the efforts.
