AND NOW THE COW
The Rotary Club of Bexhill were pleased to welcome 120 Rotarians, wives and guests to the Annual Spring Lunch held at St. Mary’s School, Wrestwood Road last Sunday 2nd April. The event was organised by the Club’s International and Foundation Committee who presented everyone with a welcome drink on arrival. This was followed by an excellent four course lunch arranged again by master chef Adrian Alpine and Jan, who had made a very welcome return from their recent travels, and his assistants including Rotarians Peter Mitchell-Davis, who has also helped on a number of previous occasions, Malcolm Viner and his wife Stella.
David Stedman, President of Bexhill Rotary Club, in welcoming everyone to the Spring Lunch reminded them that it is held to support overseas charities. This year, as well as sponsoring Emergency boxes for the Asian Earthquake appeal, we are supporting the Christian organisation “Send a Cow”, who aim to provide livestock for African families struggling to combat poverty and malnutrition. Milk, eggs or meat enable families to improve their diets, and any surplus sold to bring in desperately needed income for basic necessities. The animals’ manure increases the fertility of the land to improve crop yields, and training and veterinary services are also provided. Last September the Club were able to sponsor a hive of bees, poultry, a pig, a pair of goats and fruit trees.
The Club was looking to raise £750 for a dairy cow which will provide milk for a family to drink and to sell, plus improved harvests, and the chance to work for a better future. The recipients are asked to pass on their animal’s first female offspring to another poor family, who will do the same in their turn, and in this way the gift continues to grow. A delighted Rodney Gadsden, chairman of Bexhill Rotary’s International and Foundation Committee, announced that over £1000 had been raised by everyone supporting the event, saying “This amazing project really does transform the lives of poverty-sricken farmers and their families.”
The President thanked all those who had helped to organise and facilitate the event, and said that we were again fortunate to be able to use such a marvellous venue with thanks to David Cassar, the staff and helpers at St. Mary’s. He concluded “The luncheon would not be possible without everyone attending. Thank you all for your generosity and continued support for this popular event among Rotary friends”.
