President Jim Walker welcomed members and Jo Pawley, Assistant District Governor, Eyemouth Rotary Club to last week's meeting. He reported on last week's District meeting which he attended at Carluke, bringing salient details back to the club along with 1,000's of purple crocus bulbs which are to be planted at Galalaw roundabout to highlight "End Polio Now" when they bloom next Spring to remind people of Rotary's efforts in this world-wide project which will also be evident at various locations in the Borders. Past President Mairhi Trickett then gave an interesting talk on "nuisance birds of the Orkneys" where she previously lived. Number one enemy was the black-backed gull which killed new born lambs; the common crow which built its nest on pylons and electric poles because there are no trees and results in power cuts; fulmars because they attack people and have an extremely disgusting spit and barnacle geese because they eat grass and roots and, indeed, can strip a meadow in no time and the RSPB employ a goose-scarer to try and eradicate the problem.
