Andrew Bateman, President of Halifax Calder Rotary, presents a cheque to Tim Helliwell of Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club

Andrew Bateman said that the local Rotary Club is pleased to be able to support Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club after the devastating flood in December 2015.  In addition to providing £1200 to replace the Junior teams’ equipment, Rotary have donated £2000 towards the additional costs of running the Club during the 2016 season and £600 towards the barrier fencing along the river.

Andrew said that he was aware of the impact that the floods had on so many people and organisations within the Sowerby area and of the tremendous work that Sowerby Bridge Cricket did in promoting cricket with young people. He was impressed with the positive way in which the Club had responded to the aftermath of the flood and of the support that they had received from the wider cricket community within Calderdale.

Rotary helps and works with community groups both locally and internationally, responding to disasters and to those in need. The funds to help Sowerby Bridge came from local fund raising and were supported by the Rotary Yorkshire Flood Appeal which received donations from across the country.

In thanking the Rotary Club for their generous support, Tim Helliwell said how grateful the Cricket Club was for all the help they had received following the floods. Whilst the 2016 season had been a challenge with their grounds out of use, work was now getting underway to make sure that they grounds were ready for next season.  He was impressed with the way everyone at the Club had responded  following the floods and hoped that funding could be secured to protect the Club house from any future flooding.
