Classic and Supercars Show

Show makes £53,000 for charities

A show at Sherborne Castle where hundreds of cars were the stars has raised£53,000 for charities.

Nigel Young of Yeo Vale R/C said he was absolutely delighted with the sum raised at this year’s event.

Plans are already underway for next year’s show which will expand to two days for the first time.

More than 10,000 visitors attended the show which was up from 8,000 in 2015.

The success of the event means the main beneficiary – Cancer research UK – will receive £21,300.

Eight more charities receive amounts ranging from £1,700 to £10,000.  The charities include: Sherborne area Youth and Community Centre, Yeovil Free Wheelers, St Margaret’s Hospice, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Sherborne Rendezvous, Future Roots, Motor Neurone Disease Association and Wincanton Community Centre.

A wide range of vehicles was on display including a £1.8 million McLaren P1 that featured on BBC’s Top Gear, more than 100 eye-catching American cars and cherished cars belonging to showgoers.

The event was purchased from a commercial owner three years ago as an initiative by Yeo Vale R/C with loans from Rotarians in our Club and Sherborne Castles to create a big ticket event with the aim of raising funds for charity. The event is now run by a not-for-profit company with the two original clubs and also that of Brue Valley providing the manpower and to date has given £88,000 to charity.

Presidents of the show and owners of Sherborne Castle Edward and Maria Wingfield Digby said: “We are thrilled that the Show held in July has been a huge success and is able to donate such an astonishing amount to charity from a one-day event.

As Presidents it gives us enormous pleasure to host this event, which is not only unique in the South West but has evolved into an occasion that appeals to owners of an eclectic mix of treasured Classics in addition to fabulous and priceless Supercars.

By attracting in excess of 10,000 visitors and having the focus on raising funds for Charities supported by the local Rotary Clubs, the Show exactly matches the ethos of the Castle Estate in being able to share its wonderful location and facilities with the public at large.

This event goes from strength to strength and Sherborne Castle Estate is thrilled it will again be staged at this venue on 15th/16th July 2017, when the first two-day Show will take place”.
