Alasdair Hutton, Speaker

Alasdair Hutton OBE

The Rotary Club of Duns were royally entertained last Thursday by Alasdair Hutton, the voice of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Alasdair presented a fascinating history and took us behind the scenes of the biggest military tattoo in the world which started in 1950. Alasdair first started as Storyteller and Writer at the Tattoo in 1992 and has been the narrator for tattoos all over the world including New Zealand, Australia, America and the Netherlands.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is the biggest and the best, in Alasdair’s opinion, due to the spectacular back drop of the Castle, the sight and sound of the pipes and drums and the presence of performers from all over the world.

The show is rehearsed over three days when it all comes together and only very occasionally does something go awry which requires Alasdair to deviate from a well- rehearsed script. In 67 years the show has never been cancelled although the fireworks were cancelled once when a scotch mist came down and it became obvious that no-one was going to be able to see them.
