Report of Rotary Club of Leven weekly meeting on 21st March 2017

President Julie Brownlie welcomed guest speaker James Taylor whose talk was entitled “How to create, innovate and thrive in a global economy.

James described himself as an author, coach, trainer and speaker on the subject of Creativity. He runs an online course to help people develop their creative potential called C-SCHOOL.

He started by asking his audience how many thought that being creative was essential to their work to illustrate that many do not hold this belief. However, from Rotarians he got a mainly positive response! He also asked how many thought of themselves as creative people. The response this time was more guarded and a definition of being creative was sought to help judge this. Only 39% of people questioned worldwide thought they were creative, but James maintains that everyone has creative potential to some extent, that is the ability to produce things that are new, novel and useful. He believes that we are now living in an “Age of Creativity” where its importance will rise by 2020 from currently the tenth to the third most important skill in the workplace.

He went on to describe the creative process in 5 parts:

1. Preparation involves researching and getting inspiration from the work of others.

2. Incubation where the subconscious is at work allowing ideas to percolate in the background.

3. Insight includes the “lightbulb” moment and is often assisted by low level physical activity.

4. Evaluation is where we get feedback from others to help us reflect on whether an idea is worth pursuing.

5. Elaboration is the 99%perspiration stage where ideas are worked up and tested with the original idea probably being tweaked and retested several times.

The final section of James’ talk dealt with Continuing Creative Development where he emphasised that creativity is like a muscle, and like any muscle you need to work it otherwise you run the risk of it wasting away.

James offers online courses to help people to develop and maintain their creative potential. He invited people to download his free “Little Book of Creativity” from his website and offered his services as a speaker at other gatherings.

A short period of general discussion of and reflection on the issues followed before Dudley Foster proposed a vote of thanks for a thought provoking and stimulating session.
