Rotary assists in Soup Kitchen

On Tuesday following our Fellowship meeting a number of Rotarians helped out in the soup kitchen at St. Patrick's Church in Soho Square off Oxford Street.

At 7 pm about 100 guests walked in from the cold into the big and brightly lit church hall and were welcomed by us volunteers. Prior to the opening the tasks were explained and assigned to the helpers. The tables laid out and seatings arranged, so it looked warm and inviting to those who quite sadly live their life on the street.
The main course was a melange of meat, vegetables, potatoes and rice, followed by desert, fruit (see picture Rn Suraiya holding them up) and coffee/tea.

In talking to some of the guests one realised that some of them had professional jobs before they fell on hard times for whatever reasons.

Surely the warm welcome and a hot meal at the soup kitchen had brightened their day.

When walking home towards the Underground we noticed some homeless fellows, who came for the meal were settling down in house entrances for the night.

We found volunteering with the homeless a useful and helpful hands-on charity experience.
