SILLY SOCKS FOR SHELTER BOX

The Rotakids club at Whitchurch Primary School decided that they would carry out a fund raising event for Shelter Box.

Every day, somewhere in the world families lose their homes and livelihoods through natural disasters and conflict and Shelter Box brings emergency shelter to countless desperate people in every corner of the world.

Rotakids decided to raise money for this registered charity by inviting all the pupils to bring a £1 to school and wear SILLY SOCKS on Friday 2nd December. Hundreds of children walked, skipped and ran into school wearing a wide range of multi-coloured SILLY SOCKS. The Rotakids planned this event so that it would be a fun and educational day for all the pupils, from the very youngest three year olds in Nursery to the eldest in Year 6.

Matt Roberts, a volunteer from Shelter Box spent the whole day at the school and with the help of the Rotakids, the tent was assembled in a record time of 40 minutes in the School Hall. Shelter Box kindly gave wrist bands to all the pupils in the school as a thank you for supporting this worthwhile charity. The first picture belows shows that a Shelterbox can hold a lot of people!

The pupils were shown a video of Shelter box, including what this large green box contained and how it is transported to countries all over the world. The pupils were then given an opportunity to see the Tent and ask Matt questions about Shelter Box. He had to put on his thinking cap as the questions were quite challenging, even from the little ones in the Infants School!

The SILLY SOCKS event raised £590, enough money for the Rotakids to pay for one Shelter Box and The Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast, which sponsors the Rotakids at Whitchurch Primary School, donated a cheque of £600 to purchase a second Shelter Box. Rotakids President Theo Lewis and President Sheelagh Jones of Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast presented Matt Roberts with two cheques totalling £1190 (2nd picture below).

Well Done Rotakids for organising this fun filled day for Shelter Box!
