A public speaking competition at the Memorial Hall involving local schools.
Rotary Junior Youth Speaks Competition
On 30th January five local Junior schools competed for the Rotary Youth Speaks trophy organised by Royal Wootton Bassett and District Rotary Club.
In front of an audience of 150 at the Memorial Hall, the three members from each school were asked to speak for two minutes on a subject of their choice. The teams chose the following topics for their speeches: "Healthy Eating" (Longleaze Primary School); "Sports" (Lydiard Millicent Primary School); "The Environment" (Noremarsh Junior School); "Aspirations" (St Bartholomew's Primary Academy; and "Technology" (St Mary's Primary School).
Shirley Ludford from Swindon 105.5 Radio introduced the teams and a panel of judges comprising Philip Porter (a public speaking coach), Mary Champion (Mayor of RWB) and Frank Morton (RWB&D Rotary President) scored each speaker on their use of vocabulary, creativeness, clarity and teamwork. The standard of all the presentations was very high and the judges were impressed by the preparation, the eloquence and the confidence demonstrated by all the students taking part. However, after much deliberation, St Mary's Primary School was announced the winner and Mary Champion presented the Rotary trophy and £20 book tokens to the winning team: Ciara Normington, Casey Nelson and Jack Smith for their speeches on the opportunities, risks and impacts of technology.
The next inter-schools competition organised by the Rotary club will be the Junior Schools Quiz on 6 April at Marsh Farm Hotel.
