Club Meeting - Special General Meeting

Tue, Apr 11th 2017 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

A Special General Meeting was held after lunch to discuss amalgamation with the Helensburgh Garelochside club.

President Bill Jones welcomed eleven other members, and said that he would be visiting Ian Mowat at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley after lunch and would express the good wishes of members.

Adam Muggoch advised that the Young Photographer competition medals would be presented at Helensburgh and District Camera Club's annual prizegiving in the Yacht Club on Tuesday evening.

The president opened the Special General Meeting on amalgamation with the Helensburgh Garelochside club by reiterating the recommendations of the two clubs working party.

The group members were unanimous in wanting to proceed with merging the clubs, with a target date of July 1. The new club would be called Helensburgh and Lomond Rotary Club, would meet in the Rosslea Hall Hotel, Rhu, on Tuesday evenings at 6.30 for 7pm for a two course meal and coffee at £10 per head, and would have the same committee set up as at present.

The first president would be either Gordon Burgess or John McPherson, the junior vice-president would be Mike Jane, and the treasurer Colin Shannon.

He then invited those present to express their views. No vote was taken but almost every member who spoke was in favour in principle.

The only issue was whether business should be before the meal (as Garelochside) or during and after (as Helensburgh), and it was stated that sometimes only a few Garelochside members stayed for the meal. It was felt that this did not encourage rotary fellowship and that all should attend the meal which would be at 6.30.

It was agreed to progress to the next stage, which required to be a joint meeting of both clubs at which both clubs must agree to merge, when and where to meet, and at what stage business should be dealt with.

If agreement was reached, probably the simplest way forward would be for the older club, Helensburgh, to change its name but continue to operate the existing bank accounts with any Garelochside funds being transferred on the closure of the Garelochside club.

The secretary advised that RI approval was necessary but not urgent, and could take several months. However the amalgamation could proceed when both clubs were ready.

It was suggested that the joint meeting be held on Tuesday May 2 at 6 for 6.30pm at the Rosslea Hall Hotel, with that day's lunch at the Yacht Club cancelled.

The weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was won by Jack Rudram.
