Prior to joining the MSG in June 2016, Miss Rao was a consultant
ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist at the Royal Berkshire NHS
Foundation Trust.
Having attained an MBBS at Bangalore University in India in 1989 and
undertaking further study over the next few years, she then set up an eye
hospital in Bangalore in 1997, using funds provided by Rotary
International. Miss Rao conducted more than 1,000 free eye operations for
less fortunate members of the community and received an international
award in recognition of her service.
She was a consultant in India for seven years and medical director of the
eye hospital for four years before moving to the UK to study at the Royal
College of Physicians & Surgeons in Glasgow and Royal College of
Ophthalmologists in London.
Miss Rao’s career as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma
Specialist has been extremely busy, carrying out thousands of cataract
operations, developing glaucoma clinics and working closely with
community
optometrists in the management of ocular hypertensive cases. She has
also regularly taught clinical and surgical management of glaucoma to
specialty trainees and has also been involved in teaching and training
optometrists and nurses to improve glaucoma services.
