Peter Lamb - WW1 War Memorial in Strawberry Hill

Tue, Feb 28th 2017 at 7:15 pm - 9:45 pm

Peter Lamb, from the Resident's Association of Strawberry Hill, told us about his research into Strawberry Hill residents who had fought in the Great War.

Hunt for Heroes

This week at Rotary we had a very interesting speaker, Peter Lamb. For some time he has been researching Strawberry Hill residents who served in the Great War. Peter has collected histories of the young lads who set off for the front with very little idea of what they were getting into. Many of the tales he had to tell were both sad and interesting. So many young men of the same age from such a small area left to serve in France or Africa, some of them nei...ghbours from the same road, some of them very young. Peter had found clues on the internet, often with photos posted by their relatives, so we were able to see their stories brought to life. It was most chilling to hear the letters home to the relatives which started “We are sorry to inform you that...” which were sent for illness, wounds or worse.
Peter's own grandfather was wounded and in hospital at least three times (all those horrible letters!) before he was nearly fatally wounded and so couldn't be sent back to the front, although it did mean that he survived to tell the tales to his grandchildren.

Fascinating and a real human interest evening.
