A most delightful walk was selected for the Millennium Walk, combining the beautiful scenery of the North York moors with some delightful river walks. We started by crossing the river Esk by the stepping stones at Egton Bridge and then climbing up onto the moors through the beautiful dale of Egton Grange. After crossing some high ground with views of Whitby and Fylingdales early warning station, we descended through woods to walk alongside a small stream before joining the valley of the Murk Esk. Before reaching the village of Grosmont, we had good views of the locomotive sidings of the North Yorks Moors Railway, home to a number of preserved engines. We walked back to Egton Bridge along an old toll road; the charge for a hearse was sixpence!
The walk was approximately nine miles long. Light refreshments were provided at the halfway point and a colourful certificate was given to each walker on completion. Each walker could keep 50% of their sponsor money for their own selected charity with the other 50% being given to the club. In the Millennium year, the money raised supported the South Cleveland Hospital children's ward by providing extra facilities for the use of parents of seriously ill children.
The pictures show the late Rtn Charles Wyatt who organized the walks for 15 years crossing the stepping stones over the Esk at Egton Bridge; the locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley at Grosmont MPD; and a view of Egton Grange Dale.
