Speaker Evening

Thu, May 18th 2017 at 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm

Our very own Gerald Smith will talk to us about the New Forth Crossing.

Raffle - President Graham .

Reception - Stewart Hutchison / Gordon McInally.

On Thursday 18th May members and guests of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry enjoyed a beautiful presentation of images and music by long-standing Rotarian Gerald Smith. A pivotal figure in the club, Gerald is a keen photographer. Since the very first days of the project, he has kept a record of the construction of the Queensferry Crossing in a series of  beautiful pictures which captured not only the complexity of the construction work but the majesty of the structure as it rose to span the Forth. Set to 'Raise Me Up' by Westlife and 'A Song for the Bridges' by Kenny Herbert, Gerald's presentation drew well-deserved applause from an appreciative audience. In his vote of thanks, Gordon McInally congratulated Gerald for a show that fully justified the time and effort taken. From a personal perspective, he said that he had been surprised how little disruption South Queensferry residents had suffered during the whole project.

QUEENSFERRY HOSTS PRIMARY QUIZ FINAL

Queensferry Primary School was the venue for the City Area Final of the 2017 Rotary Primary Schools' Quiz. Four teams from Edinburgh schools took part. There was only one point between the first and second placed teams, which will go forward to the District Final. Pentland Primary School in Oxgangs was first; Dean Park Primary School, Balerno came second; Queensferry Primary School was third and Towerbank Primary School, Portobello came fourth. In her closing remarks, the head teacher of Queensferry Primary remarked on how valuable such a competition was in establishing a sense of continuity and tradition in schools.

Thanks go to organiser Jim McCulloch and all Rotarians and friends who helped out on a  most enjoyable evening.

WATCH THE ROTARY FORTH BRIDGE ABSEIL

ON SUNDAY 28th MAY

On Sunday, over 360 intrepid abseilers will descend from the Forth Bridge to raise money in the Rotary Forth Bridge Abseil. This year's adopted charities are The Yard (which provides adventure playgrounds for young people with disabilities) and Age Scotland (the largest charity in Scotland dedicated to supporting people in later life). Abseiling places have also been made available to other local charities. Courtesy of Network Rail and Balfour Beatty, abseilers descend 165ft from one of Scotland's best known landmarks, now a World Heritage Site. Last year's abseil took the total raised since the event started in 2010 to well over half-a-million pounds and this year, all abseiling places were taken by the end of March. Why not come along, watch the spectacle and visit our Charity Village in the garden of the Hawes Inn where you can find out more about the charities involved in this spectacular event. Abseiling starts at 9.00am and continues until approximately 4.30pm.
