Rotarians and Volunteers Meet to Clean the Beach
On the morning of April 1st 2017 (and no, it wasn’t an April’s Fool) 17 Rotarians and 9 volunteers met in a car park on the Greenan shore, to take part in the 11th Annual Beach Clean. Armed with visible Alloway Rotary tabards, gloves, pick up sticks and bags, which were provided by South Ayrshire council, the teams set off along the coast to clear the beaches of South Ayrshire of litter. 5 Rotary clubs in all, were out in force from Girvan to Troon, each club having it’s own stretch.
This year the beaches themselves in the Alloway patch, seemed remarkably free from litter. We wondered whether the message to “Take Litter Home” is getting through to those people who visit and use the beach, or was t due to the few storms and the prevailing winds taking the rubbish to other shores? We had to go further back into the dunes and grassland that backs the beach, to find any real litter.
We collected 35 bags of rubbish, with a total of 290 bottles, 90% of those being plastic. In total between the 5 Rotary clubs, 2000 bottles were collected and disposed of, in the Beach Clean.
One Rotarian came armed with her camera and has taken several pictures and made them into a small video, which gives you an idea of what was achieved in a few short hours.
