Dinner - Alex Alley - Around the world in a yacht (Host: Arthur Mathisen)

Wed, Jul 5th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

menu: Sliced melon & strawberries / Steak & mushroom pie, Sauté potatoes & peas.

After another successful World Record, Portsmouth sailor Alex Alley is preparing to take on his biggest challenge so far – sailing his 40’ race yacht, solo and non-stop around the world, aiming to break the current record of 137d 20h 1m 57s set by Chinese sailor Guo Chuan. 4½ months alone in an ultra-light 40’ yacht sounds daunting enough, but Alex’s challenge is just getting to the start next year.
He hit the news with his innovative PixelBoat campaign in 2016 (having over 5million Twitter impressions in 3 days) when he set the ‘Length of Britain’ record, sailing with two friends that time. The side of the boat is a growing mosaic of images of individuals and businesses – ‘we have no idea what the end result will look like, but it is certainly getting attention wherever we go’

Recently Alex was asked to take part in a BBC documentary and filming on that is due to begin shortly. He has also had interest from both the Discovery Channel and Channel 4 in a documentary about the Round the World challenge.

‘People are getting involved for all sorts of reasons – we have wedding pictures on the boat, pets and a few pictures of people’s grandchildren. There are also quite a few pictures of loved ones lost. Last week we were contacted by a lady whose husband had recently passed away, they always wanted to sail around the world together so she has uploaded a picture of them together and now they can. There are also businesses adding their logo’s to the hull and also having the option to take people out for the day on the race yacht is certainly appealing. Some have even had sails branded to increase the impact in the media.’
