Why Duncan joined Rotary

Duncan Cox

In February 1984 aged 37 I became a member of the Rotary Club of Ewell, Why?

In 1980 My children were at the local infant school in Ewell where I joined the PTA to help raise money for the improvement of the small children’s swimming pool.

I helped to organize a school fete, firework display, Christmas market and disco nights, it was great fun and gave me a lot satisfaction to know I was doing some good for others.

In 1984 my children left the school for another and I stood down from the PTA, which was sad as I was enjoying it so much.

At that time the company I worked for in Ewell introduced me to a local solicitor and at a meeting with him the conversation got round to my family and what I had been doing. I explained my work with the PTA the friends I had made and how I missed it, he said why not come to my Rotary club we help others and have good social life as well.

It was great at my first meeting to hear what they were doing in the local community to help all ages young and old alike , the work they were helping to support charities in the 3rd world and the number social events planned for the coming months.

I joined the Rotary club in March that year and once again it was good to know I was actually helping others old and young, raising money for local charities for the important work they do in our community.

I also found in Rotary that I gained a lot of new friends and I knew that should I need help or advice they were just a phone call away.

I have now been a member for over 30 years and I can honestly say that joining Rotary was the best thing I ever did and I am so grateful to that solicitor for giving me the opportunity to help others and have great fun doing it.
