In the midst of Commonwealth Games activities taking place in Australia this week, it was appropriate for the Club to welcome Richard Brickley MBE, President of Disability Sport Fife and who is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Kilrymont St Andrews.

Richard’s organisation is renowned for assisting disabled or disadvantaged athletes to excel in a wide variety of sports. Such as Michael Simpson, a young man who is currently part of the Scottish bowling team in the Gold Coast event.

Also Derek Rae, now rated No. 3 in the world rankings for the T46 marathon event and who will shortly line up for the London Marathon.

Richard was pleased to introduce Mike Drever to the club. An Orcadian who now lives in Leven with his wife and young family, Mike is a Para Trap Shooter, using a 12-bore shotgun.

His first task of the evening was to receive a trophy and sports bursary as the Kilrymont Club’s Disabled Sportsperson of the Year.

In thanking members for what he considered to be a great honour, Mike described how he had quite by chance got into the sport five years ago and progressed so swiftly with help from Disability Sport Fife and other coaches that he has already competed in World Cups and World Championships.

He was in the GB team for last year’s World Cup in Italy.

Just last month he was at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates for the first Para Trap World Cup of 2018.

Next month he will compete in the team GB Selection shoot in Wales and later in the year hopes to compete in the World Cup event in France and the World Championships in Lonato, Italy in October.

The sport is based on the rules and techniques of Olympic trap shooting and Mike is keen to improve his results – which have already been significant and included a 4thplace in the World Cup.

In presenting the trophy, Club president John Spittal remarked that the Kilrymont Rotary Club was delighted to present the award on an annual basis and continue its dedicated support to the athletes of all ages who are connected to Disability Sport Fife.
