Club Meeting — Colonel John Kelly

Lesley Kennedy arranged for Colonel John Kelly to speak about silver and hall marking, and Ron Dunachie proposed the vote of thanks. There was also a visitation by president Gordon Craig and six other members of Dumbarton Rotary Club.


President Gordon Burgess welcomed twelve other members, president Gordon Craig and six other members of Dumbarton Rotary Club, guest speaker Colonel John Kelly, and guest Alan Lees from St John Scotland.

Organiser Adam Muggoch reported that last Wednesday's Helensburgh round of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition, held in Lomond School, had been an excellent evening attended by some forty people. Two new adjudicators praised the quality of performances, with the solo vocalist award going to a Lomond pupil and the solo instrumentalist award going to a Hermitage Academy pupil. They now go through to the District 1230 final in Glasgow in March.

Community service convener Bill Deans reported that the club's entry in the annual Christmas Tree Festival in the United Reformed Church in West Princes Street would be decorated next Monday from 2.30pm, and he would welcome volunteers to help.

Colonel John Kelly gave an entertaining talk on silver and hallmarking, and displayed several examples. He also conducted a small competition which was won by Dumbarton member Malcolm King. who received the prize of a bottle of whisky. He also spoke about the five great exhibitions held in Glasgow from 1888, the final one being the Garden Festival in 1988.

The weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was drawn by Gordon Craig, who pulled out the name of Gordon Burgess for the second week in a row.

The annual Christmas raffle was conducted by Derek Hall, with the first prize of a bottle of malt whisky going to Dumbarton member David Watson, the second prize of a bottle of red wine to Malcolm King, and the third prize of a Christmas pudding to Reay Mackay.
