Fri, Jun 16th 2017 at 6:00 pm- Sun, Jun 18th 2017 - 4:00 pm

News of events run by the Friend's of Lord Hill's Column - An unmissable lecture and Open Days for the Column.

Lord Hill's Column, Shrewsbury

The weekend of 16 to 18 June will be an eventful one for the Friends of Lord Hill's Column.

On Friday 16th, at 1800, there will be a lecture at Shrewsbury Museum in the Square; the title being Mrs Coade and the Making of Lord Hill's Monument. The lecture is by Caroline Stanford, an historian and Head of Engagement with the Landmark Trust. She is an expert on Coade Stone.  Tickets are available, £10 each to include a glass of wine and are available from the Visitor Centre in the Museum shop.  There will also be an exhibition of Hill memorabilia at the museum.

On Saturday 17th. at Lord Hill's Column there will be events to mark the anniversary of Waterloo.. From 12 noon until 1400 there will be an exhibition of items from the battle of Waterloo: a revival of the Lord Hill March by Thomas Tomlin played by Shrewsbury Brass Band with the 23rd Regiment of Foot Royal Welch Fusiliers Re-enactment society.  At 1500 as part of National Civic Day, Richard Hayes will lead a walk from the Column to Bear Steps culminating in an illustrated talk about our local hero Lord Hill.

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th the column will be open to the public from 1200 - 1600. Fathers will go FREE on Sunday as it is Father's Day.

Additional Note:

The column was paid for by public subscription and cost £5,973.13s 2d; the statue an additional £315. Straphen’s spiral staircase and remarkable cast-iron handrail bears a message from bottom to top with one letter on each and every baluster. It can be read clearly by visitors to the column today. The message reads:

‘This staircase was the gift of John Straphen, the builder, as his donation towards erecting this column. The first stone of the foundation was laid December 27th, 1814 and completed June 18th, 1816, the anniversary of the glorious battle of Waterloo.’
