Climbing Snowdon five times by five different routes in the company of others affords an opportunity to experience and enjoy the magnificent scenery, geology and industrial archaeology of central Snowdonia and the possibility of seeing the natural wildlife, feral goats; birds including buzzard, red kite, chough, raven, peregrine, meadow pipit, wheatear, and ring ouzel; flora, such as the fly-eating sundew and alpine grasses and flowers including the beautiful Snowdon lily.
Join The Bala & Penllyn Rotary Club on one or more or all of 5 Snowdon climbs, Thursday to Monday, 7th to 11th September 2017 in parallel with Bishop Matthew of South West Tanganyika climbing Kilimanjaro to raise funds for a new orphanage in Sayuni, Tanzania and for tree planting to combat deforestation on Kilimanjaro, a potent cause of local climate change and loss of glaciation and perpetual snow on this iconic African mountain.
As in Snowdonia, the high number of visitors each season does damage to the environment and this is particularly difficult to control or rectify in Tanzania with over 50,000 potential climbers annually and limited local resources. Many westerners will travel to attempt the climb, raising large amounts for charity but spending in the region of £1,500 - £2,500 in the process.
Kilimanjaro is usually climbed over several days, the shortest time for visitors to the mountain being 5 days although it has been climbed by conditioned athletes – ultra runners - in 5 and a half hours!
You may wish to plan your own ‘virtual Kilimanjaro’ trip with airfares, hotel accommodation and trekking fees and then donate that amount while climbing Snowdon instead. The ultimate S5K Challenge is to make a personal donation of £1,500 - £2,500 in lieu of the cost of climbing Kilimanjaro, to climb Snowdon 5 times in 5 days by 5 different routes and to raise further funds through sponsorship.
